The Rittermark is a expanse of fertile land extending south from the White
Coast to the Ash Mountains, and west from the Iron Sea to the Alfhaum Vale.
In the center of the Rittermark is Ritterholm, its capitol. Ritterholm is
a walled city that lies at the headwaters of the Rodjast River, which flows
westward into the Iron Sea and is wide and deep enough for most sailing
ships.
Most of the population of the Rittermark are farmers, ranchers and vinyers
that cultivate the flat plains south of Ritterholm. Many residents of
Ritterholm work in the fields and orchards during the day and return to the
city at night. Few live permanently outside of the city walls because the
countryside is rife with trolls and other dangerous creatures. Ritterholm
is an important trade hub for northern waters of the mainland, shipping
goods from as far away as Elborat and Naginag. On land, caravans travel
between the Rittermark and Rogonia via the road known as the Gauntlet.
Ritterholm is an ancient city and was one of the founding cities of the
Kingdom of Dunnhurst. The Kingdom has long since ceased to exist, but the
people of Ritterholm are proud of their heritage, and old Dunnhurst
symbolism is still widely featured in their dress, customs and heraldry.
Ritterholm is currently ruled by the twins Alessaf and Kayleigh von Ritter,
who are acting on behalf of their older sister that has gone missing.
Because the ruling nobles are children, most of the day-to-day business of
the Rittermark is handled by a three-person council called the Consortium,
with their senior member, Ysfrid Koch, distant relative of the noble
Brightstone family of Marikest, acting as regent.
The vast majority of the citizens of the Rittermark are Dunnlanders: tall,
sturdy humans with light-colored eyes and hair and a hint of orcish
ancestry that infrequently shows up as darker colored hair or eyes or a
gray tint to the skin. Many other races, such as dwarves, gnomes and
halflings, also live in Ritterholm in small numbers.
Like the other noble cities of the Dunn Hurr, Ritterholm has a patron fey:
Lady Nora, a nymph who gave up a capricious life of cavorting in the forest
to become a paladin of Dowart. Unlike most of the other fey patrons, Lady
Nora takes an active role in her favored community. She is a vocal
member of the Consortium, and she heads a group of rangers known as the
Order of the Nymph, which in headquartered in Ritterholm.
Several other regional guilds are represented in Ritterholm. The church of
Dowart is widely supported and is the most popular religion in the
Rittermark. The Order of Harmony, a global organization of fighting monks,
maintains a dojo there. The Arcane College operates a chapter in the
city, as does the Order of the White Knights.
