Shadow is said to be hungry -- it craves shape and purpose. It seems to be
aware of the presence of solid matter, seeking to mimic it. It also is
sensitive to the thoughts of living beings, and those skilled in the
disciplines of shadow can shape it to their will.

It can respond to unconscious desires as well...

It is also said that during the Great Wars, the Powers of Darkness
experimented with mortals, demons and undead alike, twisting them to their
