The village of Xochitl (zoe chit til) is a small walled community of humans
located on the border of the Great Desert and the Aztec Jungle, just south
of the Ash Mountains. Although the village is a client of the
Tenochtitlan, the village is physically seperated from the rest of the
Aztec Empire by wild tracts of rain forest.
The people of Xochitl are not actual Aztecs but a related branch of
humanity that arose around the headwaters of the Amagawa River about the
same time as the Aztecs. After centuries of conflict, they came to be
politically and culturally dominated by their Aztec cousins. Most
outsiders do not know the difference and mistake them for actual Aztecs.
Most villagers favor a neutral outlook of morality, believing that loyalty
to family and liege supersedes individual moral compunctions. They feel
obligated to support the Emperor, even those edicts that are unpopular,
such as the Aztecs' war against Nueva Granada.
Prolonged contact with the Benzani, Sashala and other desert tribes has
made Xochitl a bit more pragmatic when dealing with foreigners than most
Aztecs. Visitors can freely move about the village, and some villagers can
speak the common human tongue.
Worship of Shadowfax is quite popular, and the Temple of the Sun is the
largest building in the village. Adjacent is the smaller Temple of the
Moon, an edifice devoted to the worship of Draak. These make up most of
the southern part of the village.
