The Ash Mountains are vast, and many settlements are hidden away in their
snowy peaks and valleys. East of Jo'Kerin is a region known as the Dunn
Hurr, where distantly related minor lords isolate their small communities
in order to avoid invaders and outside influences.

One such settlement is Marikest, once the ruled by the Earl of nearby
Brightstone Keep. When the Earl's Keep was overrun by barbarians, he was
exiled in disgrace by the furious people of Marikest. They elected a mayor
and transformed into an idependent democracy, free from the political
machinations that dominate Dunn Hurr.
