I agree with Dentin's post about newbie gifts. Newbie gifts are purely
voluntary. If someone decides to give exp or gold to a character that has
reset or restarted 1, 2, 3, or 50 times it is that person's choice to do
so. Regardless of why a person decides to give a gift, it is voluntary. I
could voluntarily go to fame mobs and get fame for newbies that couldn't do
it otherwise. The fact is, if you don't want newbies that have reset
characters to get newbie gifts, then don't gift your gifts to someone that
you know that reset a character. Since the gifts are voluntary, anyone can
decide to give gifts to friends that have reset or pure newbies.
Personally, I try my best to only give newbie gifts to those that are truly
new to the mud. I have nothing against the older players starting new
characters, but I want the mud to grow with new people. Maybe helper points
is an issue for people that care about leaderboards, but since I don't care
where my name falls on the leaderboards my opinion is not clouded by a
desire to rise any higher in the ranks. I agree that some reset characters
might obtaian more gifts than they possibly deserve, but people and not
programming is the only good solution for such outliers.
