Subject: high levels
------------------------------------------------------------------------
There's been a lot of noise recently that I'm neglecting high level players
somehow, either making things harder for them, ignoring them, or focusing
on newbies to the detriment of high levels. None of these are even
remotely accurate, and I consider it just as important to keep high levels
happy as newbies.

However, these are very different problems - keeping a new player for more
than five minutes is very different from keeping Westie occupied for three
years.

To keep high level players going, the game has to be hard enough to be
challenging, but not so hard that it's impossible or so easy that it's
trivial. Striking that balance is hard, and requires a lot of personal
judgement, as well as a lot of intestinal fortitude to ignore player posts
and see through the complaints to the real problem.

One of the critical issues is consistency and predictability, something
that I think brought on the exp complaints (exp is currently inconsistent
and unpredictable.) This is also a major complaint against the current
solace, as it's never quite predictable whether a mob will be able to punch
through it or not. Changes are slated for both of these.

I'm also considering ripping up how fame mobs are selected so that there's
a lot less fame, and a lot less fame churn in new and updated zones. I
think there should be a lot less fame on the game, and that fame should be
more evenly spread out, and shouldn't change all the time. I'm sure you
guys would be happy with that too, as long as the fame requirements were
also lowered - it wouldn't make sense to cut the amount of fame in half and
still require 25+ fame per level.

My point is that I am paying attention, and while there will always be Fox
News to tell you that the game is going to hell in a handbasket, remember
that it isn't. I'm listening, I'm watching, I'm thinking and I'm seeing
angles to problems that you guys don't even know about. That's my job, and
if I really sucked that much at it, our playerbase would be shrinking year
on year, not growing.
