FAQ Section 14 - [advanced] Becoming a builder or immortal

Question 14.1  - What are the different types of gods or builders?

There are five types of non-player roles on Alter Aeon:

1) Role-play only gods.  These are gods that can be worshipped, but have
   no building or administrative responsibilities.  You might never even
   see any of these gods logged in - Bobcat is a good example of this.

2) Area builder.  An area builder constructs new areas for players to
   play in, and sometimes maintains or updates older areas to improve
   them.  This is all they do - they have no other authority.

3) World builder.  These are high level builders who have the ability
   to add newly built areas to the game, and update pretty much any
   part of the world.  They normally have a large number of areas they
   are responsible for.

4) Low level administrator.  All world builders are considered low level
   admins.  They can answer some questions, and lay down temporary law when
   needed.  If you have a problem that a low level admin cannot help you
   with, they will tell you to contact a high level administrator.

5) High level administrator.  There are very few of these, as few as
   possible.  They have almost infinite power.  They are all level 110
   or higher.

Administrators may also be area or world builders.

Keep in mind that low level administrators have the power to create and
enforce temporary laws if a situation gets out of hand.  Their temporary
rules may eventually be overruled - but that does not mean you can ignore
them!

If you disagree with a low level admin, your ONLY recourse is to escalate
to a high level administrator.  Do not sit there and bitch at the low level
admin - they are allowed to freeze or lock your account until a high level
admin can be contacted.

Question 14.2  - I want to be an RP only god, what should I do?

We usually only select new RP gods after removing or destroying a different
god.  This is extremely rare, but sometimes happens for system events.
We also only select new RP gods from our currently active builder pool.

Step one:    become a builder.

Step two:    run awesome system events with a great storyline.

Step three:  wait between one and ten years for an old RP god to be deleted
             so you can get the open position.

Question 14.3  - I want to be an administrator, what should I do?

There are no positions open for administrators, and we only select admins
from our currently active builder pool.

Question 14.4  - I want to be a builder, what should I do?

To become a builder, read through the FAQ on building an area.

Most builders start out by helping another builder work on an area.  You
probably won't be allowed to build an area from scratch.  Your best bet
is to find another builder and ask them to teach you and let you help
with one of their areas.

Question 14.5  - How do builder promotions work?

We try to keep promotions based on need, not on how long you've been
building.  This means that the best way to get promoted is to show that
either you need the promotion to get your work done, or show that the
game needs you to be promoted so you can take over something.

Some specific need requirements:

 - To become a builder, another builder has to need your help.  It is
   preferred but not necessary that you have a solid command of the
   english language, including spelling, grammar, and punctuation.

 - To become a world editor, you have to be a builder in good standing,
   and you need to have a reason to be able to globally look at and
   change things.  Lastly, as a world editor, you must have a solid
   command of the english language, including spelling, grammar, and
   punctuation.  You'll be able to edit things nobody else can, so
   it's more important that you get these right.

 - To become a world builder, you have to be a world editor in good
   standing, and you need to have at least one specific section of the
   world that you'll be taking care of and improving.  World builders
   typically manage at least a hundred active areas each.

 - To become a pantheon god, you have to be a builder in good standing,
   and there has to be a solid RP reason for your name to be in the
   pantheon, and there has to be a system event to install you there.

 - To become an admin, Dentin has to trust you to be an admin.  Dentin
   doesn't trust himself to be an admin, so he probably won't trust
   you either.  Don't take it personally.

 - To become a coder, Dentin has to trust you, and you must have at
   least some level of technical competence.  This includes running your
   own Linux box for development work, being able to use compilers and
   tools, and using text editors.  The hard part will be getting Dentin
   to trust you.  Work on that first.

Note that in all cases, you have to be able to work with everyone else
in your chain of command.  If you're too abrasive, or difficult to work
with, you can be rejected regardless of your need.  We don't need
builders who are jerks, or who have a history of rule breaking.

Question 14.6  - My friend is a builder but I'm not, why won't you make me a builder?

Keep in mind that the purpose of a builder is to build and contribute to
the game, not to boss other people around.  Here are just a few of the
many possible reasons we might not give you a builder character:

1) You are level 0, you just logged on for the first time, and we don't
   know anything about you.

2) Because you don't have the proper mindset or responsibility.

3) Because you want to be an administrator and don't want to build.
   (We don't need administrators at this time.)

4) Because you cant type, cant spell, and think 'aint' is proper grammar.
   Proper grammar and spelling are a must.

5) The areas you want to build don't match the overall direction we want
   the game to go.

There are a few more, but these are the main disqualifiers we see in new
builder applicants.  Please take the time to look around and suggest
something meaningful for your first area idea.

Also, take a look at the 'rules' command and look at the rules that
builders must follow.  Be sure you can also abide by those.
