Unguents are chrisms and ointments utilized by clerics to impart
magical effects upon their recipients. They have the consistency of
syrup and are typically applied topically via anointment, although
they are viscuous enough to be poured on the recipient in a hurry.
Unguents are created using clean water, a spell component and magic.
Greater knowledge of the skill can increase the level of the brewed
unguents, as can using a higher level spell component. A mixed
unguent's level must meet or exceed the minimum casting level of a
spell in order to become an unguent for it. A spell component
is completely subsumed when creating an unguent - using more or
less of a spellcomp will not have any effect on the volume created.
The cast level of the spell used to complete an unguent also can
raise its level. If the spellcomp used has an affinity for a
particular spell and that spell is used to complete the unguent, the
power of that unguent rises greatly. (Spellgroups do not apply.)
How to brew unguents:
1. The vessel must have clean, fresh water in it, such as the water
collected from a stream or river, or that conjured by a 'create
water' spell.
2. Use the 'brew unguent' command on a spell component in order to
mix it with the water.
3. Finally, a cleric spell must be cast on the vessel to imbue the
unguent with the desired magical effect.
Rules for unguent brewing:
- the water must be clear and free from impurities and magic
- only one spell component may be used per brew
- an equal amount of water and spellcomp must be used for maximum
effect, otherwise the unguent's level will be diluted. This is
capped at 3 pounds - you cannot make more than 3 pounds of unguent
in a single batch
- different brewers may get different results with the same
spellcomps
- worshipping a god is not necessary to brew unguents, but maximum
efficacy cannot be obtained without one
- any spell component will complete the unguent, but only one made
from your god's favored object composition or affinity will produce
the maximum spell level
- herbs and food cannot be used in unguents.
