Some skills and spells, repeated powerful attacks, or extensive flurries
of minor attacks can overwhelm opponents, leaving them dazed or even
stunned. These conditions hamper their ability to fight or defend
themselves until they recover. Specifically, dazing hampers their ability
to cast spells, use magical items such as scrolls and lowers dexterity.
Stunning makes even basic attacks and tasks more difficult to accomplish.
Being dazed or stunned doesn't last long, but it may tip the balance in
a tough fight. Stunning is a more profound state of disorientation than
being dazed - if you are stunned, you are also dazed, but if you are
dazed, you may or may not be stunned.
Non-living creatures such as undead, machines and most elementals cannot
be dazed or stunned, though certain abilities like hold undead may leave
specific categories of non-living creatures in a similar stuporous state.
After recovering from being dazed or stunned, the target will be immune
to stunning for a short time.
There is no way to recover from being dazed or stunned other than
letting it wear off. However, the 'clear thinking' spell and high
constitution or wisdom can help prevent you from being dazed or
stunned. Larger creatures are more resistant to stun as well.
Berserking opponents are also more difficult to stun. Eating bitter
food can help you focus and prevent you from becoming dazed or
stunned. The 'soothe wounds' spell numbs pain, which slows the
onset of being stunned.
If you are bleeding, your constitution does not help prevent stunning.
If you are on fire, high wisdom does not help prevent stunning. If
you are bleeding and on fire, you will have trouble resisting being
stunned.
Any condition that interferes with a creature's ability to focus or
recognize its environment can make it more vulnerable to stunning.
Being confused or under the influence of certain psychadelic
poisons are the most common cases. The 'haste' spell also increases
vulnerability to being stunned, and lightning damage in general
is known to be more effective at stunning.
