Lava and magma are terms for molten rock. Lava is used for molten
rock that has been expelled on the surface, usually as part of a
volcanic eruption, while magma refers to the same substance while
still underground.

Lava is very, very hot. Even the mightiest of mortal magics are
unable to produce lava in sufficient volumes to be useful as a
weapon or building material. In addition, unless you are well
shielded against heat, you will take fire damage as long as you
are near magma or lava. There are rare minerals that only form in
and around areas of volcanic activity, so it can be worthwhile
prospecting in and around in these dangerous areas.
