In the beginning days of the world, it is said that Dentin created (or
left behind) zones of 'null magic' and items with the ability to simply
cancel spells. The purpose of this 'null magic' has never been well
explained, and prayers to Dentin generally leave priests with the
impression 'yeah, that was a dumb idea'.
Some items and creatures remain cursed (some would say blessed) with
this ability to simply 'fizzle' magic. When this happens, the caster
of the spell may notice that the spell appears to have had no effect,
or the spell may even 'fail utterly'.
Warriors in the distant past have used null magic items to battle wizards
and traverse wild magic fields, but in general the inability to use
healing or protective magic on these warriors is more of a hindrance
than a help.
Null magic also appears to be fading and vanishing from the world.
Where magic resistance artifacts were once quite common, they are
becoming increasingly difficult to find. As a result, charms and
talismans with spell resistance are becoming more frequently used to
defend against spellcasting.
