Weapons can be nearly anything - if you can wield it, you can try to use
it as a weapon. Normally, you would try to equip things like swords,
axes, staves and the like, but in a pinch you can try to wield armor or
other things. These are generally suboptimal choices - the best weapons
are almost always weapons.
For mages, druids and necromancers, weapons are usually only for self
defense, with the bulk of the power of the weapon being in its magical
properties. Necromancers and druids that have a lot of minions may find
ranged weapons such as bows and slings more useful, as they can be used
outside of melee combat.
Clerics are more likely to find themselves on the front lines of combat,
and heavy combat weapons serve them well.
Most thief combat skills perform best with one-handed weapons. Some take
penalties if using a two-handed weapon, others, such as backstab, can
only be used with a one-handed weapon.
For warriors, two-handed weapons are often best. A warrior with unarmed
combat skill can perform almost as well as a weapon, the main drawback
being that some combat skills, such as disarm, parry and groundstrike,
cannot be used without a weapon.
