Many crafted items can be used to upgrade or assemble other items. Adding
an item to another will generally combine its stats, but there are
limitations of how powerful a given piece can be. Stats do not always
transfer, or transfer at full strength.
Additions:
lapidary gem stones - add stats to forged, woodcrafted or lapidary jewelry,
leather collars, shell and dragonscale rings and forged weapons with guards.
Pearls scavenged from gathered mollusks are also treated as gemstones,
as are soulstones by necromancers that know the soulsmith skill.
lapidary spangles - a type of rivet, add stats to leather armor and clothing.
forged armor studs - a type of rivet, add damroll and (if possible) stats to
leather armor, add damroll to wooden melee weapons.
forged armor spikes - a type of rivet, add hitroll and (if possible) stats
to leather armor, add hitroll to wooden melee weapons.
forged armor scales - a type of rivet, add AC and (if possible) stats to
leathercrafted armor, completely transforming them into scale armor.
forged shield rims - adds AC and (if possible) stats to woodcrafted shields
forged brooches - adds stats to tailored cloaks and outerwear
plucked feathers - adds charisma to tailored and leathercrafted hats, stats
to knapped weapons and to fletch arrows to increase their damage.
pelts - lines leather and tailored objects with fur, adds additional
saving cold and possible other effects.
lapidary orbs - add stats to woodcrafted canes and forged scepters
forged buckles - add AC to leathercrafted belts, increased capacity to belt
containers
Parts:
grips, handles, hafts and poles - shaft for assembling weapons. Contributes
to the weapon's weight and speed, can also transfer stats. Grips can also be
added to woodcrafted bows and canes and leathercrafted whips. Leathercrafted
slings can be added to woodcrafted poles to create staff slings.
forged guards - assembling bladed weapons and certain pole arms. Guards add
parry to weapons, with tougher metals giving higher amounts of parry. Soft
metals such as copper or sterling silver will not bestow a parry bonus unless
made into basket and cup guards, which increase the amount of parry given.
forged chains - assembling flails and similar weapons, contributes to the
weapon's finished weight and a small amount to its speed.
forged blades and heads - the main part of forged weapons. Primary source
of the weapon's dieroll, hitroll, damroll, stats and has strong influence
on speed.
forged crossbow hardware - assembling crossbows, adds stats and affects
speed the finished weapon.
Inlays:
Ductile metals such as gold, copper and mithril can be inlaid into wood,
bone, shell, dragonscale, metal and stone items for a small increase in
stats.
Soft metals that can be forged into sling bullets can also be melted down
and used to 'load' crafted weapons, increasing their weight and damage.
Unworked lapidary stones, coral, mother-of-pearl and bone can be inlaid
into forged armor and certain pieces of jewelry to add stats, but can
slightly lower the ac of forged armor.
Gathered firewood can be inlaid if you know the beadmaking skill.
The crafting skills have a 'check' option that can be used on items
to see what kinds of upgrades they are eligible for, for example:
'leathercraft check <item>'
You can use the 'appraise' command on an item to get an idea of how much
it can be improved by upgrades. If an item does not have very much room
for improvement, it might be better to save your upgrade for a better
object, especially if you have a rare gemstone or a MASTERCRAFT upgrade.
