Killing monsters is one way of gaining experience to become more powerful.
When you kill a monster, you get experience for it that you may trade in for
levels or practices. To see other ways to gain experience, try
'help experience'.
Death is when you try to kill something and don't quite succeed. After you
die, you will find yourself at your private recall site with no hitpoints and
no mana.
Dying has other bad effects. The most obvious is that you lose half of the
experience that you currently have, up to a limit of 20 million experience,
increasing in step with practice cost at higher levels. You also lose a few
percentage points in a random spell or skill, and a percentage of the gold
you were carrying.
If you die multiple times in a very short interval, the game may decide to
briefly freeze you. This is to prevent rare instances of death loops, where
you have an aggressive mob in or very near your recall that will kill you
over and over before you can react or recover.
