Keywords are: 'laggity lag lag'
Lag is when you are in the middle of doing something and your screen freezes.
Nothing scrolls past - then suddenly stuff starts happening again. Sometimes
really severe lag can last for several minutes, and occasionally it gets so
bad that your connection will eventually time out and give up in disgust.
There are two main sources of lag. The first, most common source is the
internet itself, and is called 'network lag'. Parts of the network can
become overloaded, can crash, or catastrophically fail. Any of these can
cause your connection to act badly, and sometimes can make it impossible to
establish a connection to the mud at all.
The second type of lag is called 'server lag', and is caused by the mud
machine itself. There are usually only two reasons for this: The first is
that the mud has detected and internal problem and decided to reboot itself.
The second is when a coder is using the debugger to try to fix a problem.
Server lag very rarely if ever happens. If you aren't sure if it is server
lag or network lag, assume that it is the fault of the network.
It should be noted that there is absolutely nothing that can be done about
network lag. The coders do a very good job of making sure there is no server
lag, but the network is out of their control. Please do not ask for reboots
to fix lag problems - they will not help.
