Traps are activated the moment that they are triggered.  There a four
possible triggers for traps:

Location: These are ground or floor mounted triggers, such as the
covering over a pit or a pressure plate.  Flying opponents float over such
triggers.

Proximity: These are activated when approached, irregardless of
whether one is flying or not.  Examples include tripwires (mounted well
off the ground) and wind vanes.

Contact: These triggers are tripped when the victim comes in contact
with the trapped item, like when trying to open it, unlock it or otherwise
touch it.

Magical: A magical sensor is infused into the trap, causing it to
trigger when anything gets near it.  Unlike location and proximity
triggers, a magical trigger reacts to ethereal creatures.
