Roleplaying is the act of playing your character as though it were not you,
and were a separate person.  You have to put yourself into the frame of mind
of your character, and separate what you know personally with what your
character should know.  Some terminology might help:

'in-character' are the things that your character does when it is behaving
as itself.  For example, if your character is a big dumb male warrior, he
might be impressed by other warriors.  He might shun mages because he doesn't
understand them, and doesn't trust magic.  He might even be a member of a
religious cult dedicated to getting rid of all magic.  But there are things
he definitely wouldn't know:  he wouldn't know what is inside the mages
guild, he probably wouldn't know how to enchant his sword, and he certainly
wouldn't know what a toaster or telephone is.

'out-of-character' is what you do when you have to communicate about things
that don't relate to your character, or when you are using your character as
a vehicle to discuss real life occurrences.  This is when you talk about
your phone, toaster, or what you had for dinner last night - but remember,
when you are in character, your character should not be aware of any of
these things.

Roleplaying is encouraged on this mud, but without being strictly enforced
it is difficult to find other people who role play.  Occasionally quests are
run that require role play to complete, and you can get brownie points and
extra quests from gods who like role playing.
We have been gradually adding things to encourage role playing, but for the
most part this is a game and we expect people to primarily have fun.
