Title: a book entitled "On Fairies: The Low Fairies"

The term "Low Fairy" is a catch-all name for a wide variety of common fairy
races. It is generally meant to apply to any fairy creature that is not
part of their nobility, i.e. the "high" fairies such as Green Men, Aalfs,
kelpies and other powerful entities.

The following are the most commonly encountered low fairies:

Pixies - also called sprites, these are the famous winged "wee folk" so
beloved in artwork and fairy tales. They are humanoids with the wings of
dragonflies, butterflies or other insects. Most are friendly, and the
largest typically stand no more than two feet tall. Pillywiggins are a
variety of pixie found on the island of Sloe. A violent breed of pixie,
known as bixies, can be found inhabiting the dark forests of Kordan. A
tribe of dark pixies live in the swamps of Archais.

Brownies - these tiny men and women resemble humans or elves, but are
usually less than two feet tall, sometimes much smaller. They live in
wooded areas, often in the company of pixies.

Leprechauns - another of the various breeds of "wee folk", leprechauns
have much in common with dwarves and gnomes. They are famously skilled as
smiths, cobblers and miners. They often have hoards of treasure, which they
guard jealously. Red caps, also called powries, are a particularly violent
tribe of leprechauns that are known to murder travelers and dye their hats
in the blood of their victims.

Nymphs - these female nature spirits are living embodiments of the lands in
which they live. They come in endless varieties: nereids in the ocean,
naiads in fresh water, oreads in hills and mountains, lampads in caves,
dryads in woodlands, anthousai in flowering meadows, aurae, also known as
cloud nymphs, in the skies, and so on.

Various nymph-like creatures such as glaistigs, huldras and frost maidens
can be found throughout the world. Many are dangerous predators. Slyphs
and undines are sometimes considered nymphs, but are actually elementals.

Elves - the term "elf" is applied to a broad range of roughly human-sized
folk. The typical elf looks like a slender human, with sharp features and
long, pointed ears. They are known for their grace, agility and skill.
Unlike most fairies, they build large communities in the style of mortal
men. It is widely accepted that they are descended from the High and Fell
Aalfs that stayed in our world to settle and have children. The major
subraces of elf are:

High Elves - living in the western Thalenwood Forest, tall, noble and
friendly with outsiders, they are clustered around the city of Trinsic and
the Sinar'i Valley.

Grey Elves - cousins of the High Elves, they live in the eastern Thalenwood
Forest, in and around the city of Greyhaven.

Green Elves - another offshoot of the High Elves, these sylvan folks live
in the forests west of Ralnoth. Their hair is varying shades of brown and
green.

Wood Elves - hailing from the southern forests, these elves have light blue
skin. They are found primarily around the Cornian Valley.

Dark Elves - also called drow, these elves primarily descend from Fell Aalf
bloodlines. They typically live in underground cities scattered across the
world. Most drow societies are devoted to demon lords such as Carahade and
Mother Anichith.

Dragon Elves - though technically a fey-touched race rather than true
fairies, Dragon Elves have developed their own culture independent from
both the elves and dragons they are descended from.

Snowborn Elves - living in the northern Ash Mountains in a village called
Silverwind, these hardy elves are known for their kindness, craftsmanship
and survival skills.
