Alter Aeon Rules of Conduct
Rules Section 7 - Annoyance and Griefing
Rule 7.1 - Introduction
This section deals primarily with minor problems that typically arise during
game interactions between players. Most of these entries are related to
annoyance behaviour. Penalties for minor offenses are not severe, and are
often dismissed if a first offense or if a mistake was made. For repeated
offenses, all possible punishments are available for use.
Note that annoyance casting can result in player deaths or other unfortunate
side effects. Should another player die as a result of annoyance behaviour,
much more severe consequences can result.
Rule 7.2 - Informational - just because you can, doesn't mean you should
The game server tries pretty hard to keep players from griefing each
other, but in some cases there's no effective way to automatically
prevent rule breaking. In other cases, the code might be buggy and
allow something it shouldn't.
The fact that it's possible to do something does NOT mean that it's ok to
do. You can still be frozen for doing things that are against the rules,
even if you use a code bug to do it.
In short, saying "it's a code bug" will not save you. Think for yourself.
Rule 7.3 - Thou shalt not screw with recall sites
This takes many forms, only some of which are listed below:
1) Don't bring aggressive monsters to recall where they might kill someone
who wasn't expecting, for example, a greater pit fiend to wail on them
while asleep.
Note that bringing a monster to recall implies any particular mechanism
that might be used to coax a monster into a recall site that it otherwise
would not be able to enter. This includes putting monsters in bags,
summoning them, charming them, and dropping them into recall from above.
2) Don't cast annoyance spells in recall sites. This includes casting
wall of ice on all the exits so no-one can leave, as well as casting
chimes or squeaky floors all over the general area. Casting darken so
no-one can see anything is probably also a bad idea.
3) Don't cause people to die in recall, unless they were already dying,
and it's not your fault, and you feel like being a bastard. For example,
don't attack the guardian in Ralnoth's Temple of Dentin, then confuse
him so he attacks other players.
4) Don't spam recall. This includes cluttering recall with zombies or
useless objects. This also includes running a bot in recall (bots are
not allowed in recall points, see the bot rules section.)
Rule 7.4 - Thou shalt not cast annoyance spells
Casting spells on or about other players with no purpose other than to
cause irritation or grief is a punishable offense. Healing and
beneficial spells are generally not considered an annoyance unless
they break the anti-spamming rules.
This includes casting 'dispel magic' on other players without consent.
Note that you can use the 'set annoy' command to make it harder or
easier for people to cast annoyance spells on you.
Rule 7.5 - Thou shalt not dispel other players without consent
Players are often affected by a lot of spells, and it takes time and
mana to cast and maintain those spells. Casting dispel magic on a
player when they are fully spelled can cause all that mana to
dissipate into thin air.
Also, dispelling a player in battle can make you responsible for their
death if they die!
Don't dispel people unless they specifically request to be dispelled.
Note that you can use the 'set annoy' command to make it harder or
easier for people to dispel you.
Rule 7.6 - Thou shalt not summon other players without their consent
Being summoned when you aren't expecting it can be an irritation at a
minimum, and can result in very bad consequences (including death) in
other cases. You should never summon someone unless you have their
permission.
There is a clear and obvious exception to this rule - you may summon
pk or ppk characters, within certain restrictions, if you intend to
player kill them:
You MAY NOT summon a pk to a dangerous monster or area if there's a
chance that the monster or area will kill them instead of you killing them.
A ppk player MAY summon another ppk player to a dangerous monster
or area with intent to kill them.
Note that you can use the 'nosummon' command to make it impossible for
other players to summon you.
Rule 7.7 - Thou shalt not pick up other players without their consent
Being picked up, like being summoned, can be an irritation at a minimum,
and can result in very bad consequences (including death) in other
cases. You should never pick up someone unless you have their permission.
Like summoning, you may pick up pk or ppk characters, within certain
restrictions, if you intend to player kill them:
You MAY NOT pick up a pk and drop them near a dangerous monster
or area if there's a chance that the monster or area will kill them instead
of you killing them.
A ppk player MAY pick up another ppk player and drop them near a
dangerous monster or area with intent to kill them.
Note that you can use the 'nosummon' command to make it impossible for other
players to pick you up. If you cannot be summoned, you can not be picked up.
Rule 7.8 - Thou shalt not intentionally foul other player's triggers
Other players will have triggers, and sometimes those triggers will be
stupid, broken, or otherwise damaged. Don't intentionally grief a player
by abusing their broken triggers.
There's a limit to how far this rule extends: if you cause triggers by
doing normal things needed to play your character, it'll be on the target
to fix their triggers. Keep in mind that this doesn't give you license
to be a jerk about it - try to help them if possible.
Rule 7.9 - Thou shalt not have stupid triggers
Even though other players should generally avoid messing with your
triggers, that doesn't mean you can add triggers for whatever you want.
If your triggers are obnoxious, poorly built, generate spam, or allow
for remote control, you will be required to fix or remove them.
Rule 7.10 - Special mention - tensor inventory spam
Don't fill Tensor's disks with junk items and give them to AFK people.
This is extremely annoying and can sometimes even get players killed
if they reach encumbrance limits. This is considered griefing.
Rule 7.11 - Thou shalt not in general grief other players
This is the catch all rule to handle griefing behaviour not listed above.
Basically, don't be a jerk and inconvenience people just because you can.
If you do this repeatedly, Dentin will find ways to inconvenience you.
