This slag is metal left behind from ore being smelted or a metal item that
was accidently melted down. It is black with soot and impurities, but very
dense and hard, suggesting a high purity. You can further refine it into
useable metal by smelting it like a raw ore.

It is impossible to tell what metal it is by appearance alone, but if you
'identify slag, it will reveal the composition.
