Across the cover are the words, 'Magical Items of Summoning'.
There are various items throughout the world that can summon creatures to
serve the summoner. They may assist in battle, or hang back to cast spells
similar to demon familiars.
Idols are rare constructions of druidic magic, related to spirit totems.
They are carved from wood, usually in likeness of the creature they call
forth. It is said the art of making them is taught by ents, and that few
mortals have ever learned it. They can call forth beasts such mountain
lions or fairy creatures such as dryads to aid the user.
Not all idols can summon creatures. Many are merely decorative, and are
often used in religious rites.
Figurines of wondrous power are small statutes made in the form of various
animals. They are usually cast from metal, but nearly material can be used
in their construction.
Commonly known figurine of wondrous power include the silver hawk shaped
figurine of wonder, which will summon a silver hawk that will assist in
battle and will try to cast fly on anyone in the group. Another figurine is
the griffin shaped figurine of wonder, which summons a griffin that doesn't
assist in battle, but will try to soothe the wounds and cure any group
members of poison.
Some magical tomes are used as summoning vessels. Many copies of the 'book
of summoning' exist. When the spell contained within is recited, it calls
forth an extra-planar entity known as a tin-man, which will also assist the
user in battle.
