At one point, it probably had a leather or some other padded lining - now
it's just a shell, a big, heavy, iron shell. It looks like at some point,
someone tried to start a fire in it... there are still some ashes and coals
inside it. Two leather straps have been crudely attached to the rim, so you
could pick it up even if it were full of coals.
