The Quest for the Silver Halberd, part 12

by Sparity Ket, Captain of the Order of the White Knights

When the group got near the southern wall, they heard a wacky voice call
out to them, "Hey, guys!". As they looked around the source of the voice,
it called out again, "Up here!" The voice originated from the hanging
plain steel short sword, which looked like it hadn't been touched in years.
They spent a bit of time quizzing the sword, which revealed that he was a
creation of Barrik but had spent most of its existence hanging in the
library, unused. The sword claimed that his name of "Dullblade" was given
by his creator, and as the party continued to query Dullblade they soon
learned why he had been given such a dimwitted moniker. His particular
speech impediment that changed "r"s and "l"s into "w"s made him difficult
to understand at times--nonetheless, Silliriun took a liking to Dullblade
and took him down from the stand, wielding him from that point forward in
his non-mechanical arm.

Dullblade claimed to know nothing about the "watmen", only that they were
afraid of him and ran away whenever he tried to talk to them. Upon
returning to the study, Dullblade was able to identify the book on the desk
as one of Barrik's spellbooks. Kenwick and Zorat then approached the book
and greedily paged through it, quickly and efficiently copying its spells
into their own spellbooks. A brief 'detect magic' spell revealed to
Justice that the suit of armor in the room was magical, and so he started
to examine it and consider whether to replace his non-magical plate armor
with the magic armor.

When Jamarkas approached the armor to get a better look, the suit of armor
rattled loudly and began to move. Although slow and cumbersome, it was
very strong and carried a dangerous axe which it began to swing wildly
around. Jamarkas and Justice danced back to stay out of its reach, while
the former unleashed a hail of bullets and the latter lunged at it with his
halberd from a safe distance. Silliriun brought Dullblade to bear, but the
sword protested loudly against being used against "his friend"--
mevertheless, Silliriun's will prevailed and Dullblade was used to cut the
armor apart. Kenwick's and Zorat's spells had no effect on it, but the
others managed to rip the golem apart with their weapons without serious
injury until it quit moving. For now, they let the defeated armor lie and
returned they way they had came, passing through the dining room and
kitchen with Dullblade chattering all the way until they reached a small
antechamber that lay between the ballroom and tomb.

They found the room empty and cold. This room was along the northern side
of the keep, and a long, narrow crack in the outer wall allowed the frigid
winds from outside to enter. The floor, walls and ceiling were lined with
frost, save a single wooden chair that sat facing away from them to the
west. Under the chair was a pile of coins. Zorat used a 'detect magic'
spell and was overwhelmed by the aura present on every surface thereof.
Unable to bear looking at it for more than a few seconds, he was unable to
determine which school of magic, if any, was present within the magic aura.

The party entered cautiously and approached the chair. Jamarkas was just
about to touch the coins underneath it when an gravelly voice spoke. "Go
ahead and take the treasure. It's definitely not cursed." Walking around
the chair, they could see a face in the front of the backrest as if it had
carved there that appeared to speak, further encouraging them to take the
money and reassuring them that nothing bad would befall them for doing so.
Dullblade quickly informed everyone in earshot that he had no idea who it
was.

After belabored questioning, the group was finally able to pry the truth
from the chair. He had been a halfling named Plippo Stickyfingers, and
Barrik had caught him robbing his keep. He was cursed to be the chair by
Barrik, with the condition that he would be set free if he caught another
thief trying to rob the keep, in which case Plippo would be set free with
whomever touched his treasure taking his place as the spirit of the
chair. Jamarkas brashly decided to take the treasure anyway, and since he
resisted the effects of the curse, the party moved on, leaving Plippo to
bemoan his fate. They passed through the ballroom, routed a herd of dire
rats, and then reached a small room on other side.
