Item description:

It's a half helm, covering the ears and back of the head, but leaving
more open and exposed than a full helm.  On the plus side, you can see
more easily and it's easier to move your head while still getting a
significant amount of protection for your noggin.

It has clearly seen a lot of use, and judging from a rather nasty dent
in it, it probably saved the life of its owner in times long past.
Beyond that, it seems likely to just be a cherished heirloom for a
history long since forgotten.
