Scholars researching the Mad Castle have found the best source of
information in the notes of a mortal named Arislan.  From these notes they
have drawn the following conclusions about this strange castle.

The castle was originally built for the Deep Dragon by the populace of the
nearby fishing village.  For several generations, she ruled the area,
turning the forest to the north into a rank dead place and killing all
except for a few to remain in her service.  From those remaining humans
rose a hero who eventually slew the Deep Dragon, and the people crowned him
King and gave to his now-royal line ownership of the castle and surrounding
lands.

About thrity years ago, however, disaster once again came to Castle
Rubicon.  The Corruption of Chaos swept through the land.  It was rumored
that the Deep Dragon had not been killed, but was wounded so badly as to
need decades to recover. During this time she plotted her revenge.  Finally
she was able to enact her plan of vengeance.  In the guise of a human, she
beguiled and betrayed the now-weakened royal line.  Certainly the castle
itself seems to have gone mad with the evil twists of its fate:  stairs
lead into walls, rooms hum and shrink around you, huge rooms are buried in
rubble or have been flooded by the rancid moat, and the only remaining
inhabitants are insane.
