East of the dwarven mountain there is another mountain even larger.
Griffins, basilisks, and manticores swarm over the mountainside, attracted
to the power that is said to lie within its bowels.  According to the
dwarves, an evil sorceror from ages ago was imprisioned inside the mountain
after being defeated in battle by good immortals.  Little else is known about
it, and many do not even believe the story anymore.

Despite the legend, the dwarves desire to colonize the mountain and mine it,
since they say that it is a rich source of emeralds.  Yet every incursion of
their armies into the griffin mountain has always ended in failure, since the
dwarves find themselves at the extreme disadvantage fighting the flying
beasts because of their stature.

The elves of Thalenwood say that the dwarves once hired a troop of elven
archers to scourge the mountain.  The campaign was a complete success--the
archers slew every last griffin on and in the mountain.  But when the first
party of dwarves made their way toward the mountain a few months later to
settle, they were forced to flee, for the monsters had returned in full
force.  The dwarves deny having hired elves, but acknowledge that the
mountain was once conquered, and the griffins returned soon thereafter.
