The Great Southern road passes through a lush and fertile land just before
reaching its end at the beginning of the Eastern Trade Road. The province
is bordered by hills in the north and east, but it is rather flat in the
south, with the exception of the slight depression of land known as the
Cornian valley. The Forest of Brigands, an arm of the tropical Aztec
Jungle, runs along the valley to the east and south. Cornia is divided
politically and racially into two main factions: the valley people and the
mountain people.

The valley people are humans of Ralnothian descent, and their seat of power
resides in the town of Ransom in the center of the Cornian valley. Their
local government is a representative democracy, although they utlimately
owe fealty to the Kingdom of Avalon. For centuries, Ransom was a sleepy
little farmtown, but with the gradual shift of trade away from the Hartmur
trade route toward Daigaku-Tatami, Ransom has become an important stop for
travelers. Despite the newfound merchancy, most of valley people still
live on small single-family farms. Their chief crops are wheat and indigo.
A handful of wood elves have a lumber mill just out of town that they've
operated for decades, and woodcarving has been a highly respected
profession for generations among the valley people.

The mountain people are a mixture of peoples that occupy the Cornian hills.
The original inhabitants were a branch of giants akin to the firbolgs.
These giants once resided peacefully amongst the valley people, but
suspicion and hate gave way to civil war, and the giants were driven to the
hills. There they established a monarchy that has been ruled by the
primogenital lineage of the Mountain Kings until present day. The majority
of the mountaineers are half-giants that the valley people call
highlanders. They've been a peaceful people in the past and have attracted
many immigrants, human and otherwise, from other parts of the world.
However, there have been an increasing number of bandits coming down from
the hills to make raids against the valley people. Those mountain people
who don't earn a living through banditry are goat and sheep herdsmen or
mine granite and bauxite out of the hills. They have little business with
the rest of the world--whereas the valley people have been conquered and
subjected by every passing army of past empires because of their location
near two ancient highways, the highlanders have endured siege after siege,
untouchable in their mountain fortresses.
