The interior of the Ash Desert is a flat plain of solidified magma spewed
out by the eruption of Mount Sartus, the shattered volcano on its eastern
edge. The cone was completely blown out, burying the village in the center
of the valley under a flood of liquid rock.

It is believed by some that the massive eruption tore open a rift to the
plane of fire, though some would argue the opening of the rift caused the
eruption. Whatever the reason, a tear in the fabric of reality sometimes
appears above the magma fields, disgorging otherworldly elementals to wreak
ruin upon travellers.
