Subject: GCS
------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) is a simple 12 point scale used to judge
how deep someone is in a coma. The lowest score is a 3, which is
basically no response, and the highest is 15, which is pretty much
fully conscious. It's not perfect, but it's really useful and helps
doctors quantify how bad off someone is. There's even some common
mnemonics for it:

Score of 9, everything's fine
Score of 8, intubate (put in breathing and food tubes)
Score of 7, go to heaven

Last Thursday morning, my mother was hit by a car and admitted to the
neuroshock trauma ward ICU near her house. After she stabilized, she
had a GCS score of 6.

I'm not looking for sympathy or condolances. I don't want your prayer
or 'positive energy', whatever the fuck that's supposed to be. None
of these things will help fix the problem, or make things better in
any way. They are a waste of time that will make you feel like you're
helping without actually helping and without actually putting forth
any real effort.

Instead, what I'd like is for all of you to stop for a minute and
remember that the people around you, in real life and on AA, are
actual people. They have moms and dads, feelings and ideas, questions
and problems and a life just like you do. We all live in the same
world, and we only survive if we cooperate to make the world a better
place instead of tearing it down.

Try to remember that when you talk to your fellow man. Maybe, just
maybe, try to be less of a dick to other people. And for extra
credit, consider donating money to help research better medical
technology, so that maybe other people will face a better than one
in three chance of having to bury their mother the next time this
happens.
