1) The mud doesn't try to maintain a set point of 500 mil.  It hasn't
worked that way in 10+ years.  The mud doesn't have a set point anymore.

2) Logged off gold gets gradually removed from the calculations over time. 
If players leave a million on a character they never log in, eventually it
will stop mattering.
