Keywords are: 'city cities gads gad's landing addlebrook' Gad's Landing is a large city built around one of two ancient portals on the island of Archais. It lies on the western side of the island, and sunset often finds the city in the shadow of Gad's Mountain. Gad's Landing is named after the mage Gad Addlebrook, who discovered the island of Archais several centuries ago. Once links with the mainland were established, Gad elected to stay on Archais and help colonists set up a new city. The mountain in the center of the island is also named after Gad. Surviving records indicate that Gad was a powerful yet eccentric mage, and the failed experiment that moved him to Archais resulted from an attempted combination of planar and teleportation magic. (Modern spell casters will immediately recognize the issues with this!) Finding himself in a strange and unfamiliar location, Gad began casting increasingly powerful location spells until with extreme effort he managed to ascertain that the Temple of Dentin in Ralnoth was "somewhere to the east, and very, very, very far away". Unable to summon anything across such a distance by himself, Gad constructed a temporary residence and began working on boosting a communication spell so as to be able to contact the Mage's Guild on the mainland. After two years of effort, he was able to reliably do so, though it was another three years before a sufficiently powerful gate spell could be cast to bridge the distance. Rather than return Gad to the mainland, a decision was made to send more mages to Archais and set up a more permanent, easier to manage gate between the two. The later discovery of the ancient portal network eventually eliminated the need for this, and in the year 501 Dentin himself moved the far end of the portal to central Ralnoth to promote trade (and his temple.)
