All new characters are created as humans, and you cannot select a different
race when you create your character.  We did not feel that races would add
significantly to the game if they were used indiscriminately by inexperienced
players.  It also does not add to the spirit of role play to have a town full
of humans, elves, drow, orcs, dragons, and other assorted races that should
hate each other.

It is not possible to change races at this time.
