There are serveral types of permafrost terrain:

taiga  - cold forests, primarily composed of evergreen trees
tundra - partially or completely frozen plains and wetlands
ice    - covered by glaciers, ice or years of accumulated snowpack

These terrains denote cold areas with frequent snowfall and cold temperatures.
Resources are scarcer in these terrains than in their temperate counterparts,
though certain kinds of minerals are more abundant, including fossil
fuels such as petroleum, coal and bitumen.
