The '-r' recursive  switch when added to the get or put commands allows you to retrieve or place items 
from nested containers in your inentory.

For example suppose you have a vortex weightless in your inventory that containes a green bag that contains some soulstones
Typing 'get soulgem greenbag -r'
would retrieve   a soulstone.

This saves you from having to   type out three commands to first get the green bag from the vortex, then the soul stone from the green  bag, and then put the green bag back in the vortex.

Note: This only applies to containers in your inventory and only  one level deep so for example if the green bag contained another container  this would not be searched.
