Intelligence is a measurement of how well you can reason and figure out
how things work.  Intelligent characters prefer to think on their feet
more than relying solely on memory or following procedures. Intelligence
helps with:

- mana capacity and regeneration
- meeting the requirements to cast mage, necromancer and, to a lesser
  extent, druid spells
- picking locks
- thief skills that involve outwitting opponents, such as feint and distract
- very low intelligence can be disastrous to crafting

Intelligence can be magically augmented, via the 'clear thinking' brew, and
debuffed with the 'feeblemind' cleric curse.

You can raise your intelligence permanently with the 'train' command.
