A corpse is left behind any time a character dies, be it a monster, player,
or you.  When killing a monster, the corpse will contain all the equipment
that it was wearing or carrying, and possibly some gold!

If you die, you get to keep your equipment, but lose some of your gold and
experience.  You can't recover the gold, but you can get some of the lost
experience back by having a friend resurrect your corpse.

Your corpse will decompose after about 40 minutes, so if you can't get it
back in that time, it will be lost.

(Historical note:  in the olden days, death meant your equipment went into
 your corpse as well.  It was possible to lose all your eq if your corpse
 decomposed.  This no longer happens.)
