The 'double attack' skill is a mid- to high-level warrior skill.  It is always
in use when it can be.

The skill makes use of the concept of 'follow through', where the momentum
from the swing of a weapon might be put to use on a second target if one is
available.  When fighting multiple creatures, the double attack skill will
allow you to hit a second target after striking the first.

Weapons with a flexible damage type such as whips and flails are more
effective at striking additional enemies.
