There are several varieties of barren terrains:

rock      - rocky wastes, such as ancient lava flows or scree around a mountain, rare
crystal   - dominated by large crystalline formations, such as found the elemental
            plane of earth, very rare
metal     - made from or littered with metal parts or machines, very rare
wasteland - barren lands inhospitable to most life, such as salt flats, alkaline
            lake beds or magically depleted areas
lava      - rarely found on the surface, magma, masses and pools of molten rock,
            traversing lava usually causes fire damage!
shadow    - partially solid, quasi-real shadow, found in certain extraplanar realms.
            Low in resources, but the ones found here are unique. Due to its nature,
            shadow terrain severely limits the distance of scanning.

Barren terrains are devoid of plant and animal life, and may indicate extremely
hostile conditions. Mineral content varies wildly. The 'extromephile' skill
reduces movement costs through barren terrains.
