Title: a book entitled, 'A Treatise on Fauns'

A Treatise on Fauns, by Fogonero the Red Mage

Fauns are a race of fey that have the torso, head and arms of a human and
the hind legs of a goat. The human head of the males is surmounted by two
horns that poke through the satyr's coarse, curly hair. All fauns have
brown eyes.

It is said that fauns are fairies that symbolize nature's carefree ways.
Whether they are representatives of nature is debatable, but it is a fact
that they do not spontaneously spring into existence like some believe.

Female fauns are rarer than males but do exist. There are about five males
for every one female. Because of this, females are closely guarded by their
fathers until they reach courting age, which is ten years old. Competition
between potential suitors is extremely fierce. Some females attempt
polyandrous relationships, but male fauns are far too jealous of one
another for such a relationships to function for long. Many male fauns
seek companionship outside of their race because of lack of available
females.

There are two types of fauns: the more common satyrs, and the less common
korreds.

The color of satyrs ranges from heavily-tanned to a light brown, with very
rare individuals having been born with red skin and black fur. Their hair
is either red, medium brown or dark brown. Their horns and hooves are
black. The horns of a male satyr are wide and curl backward over the
skull. Satyrs can be found in the Ash Mountains, the Elwood, the Shady
Vale and the Southern Hills.

Korreds are usually pale-skinned with very dark fur and hair. Males have
short, sharp horns. They have wildly flowing beards and fur. They live in
the forests of the Dunn Hurr.

Both varieties of fauns live in close-knit communities. Satyrs have a more
tribal structure, and colonies of satyrs typically have a chieftain.
Families of korred clans generally live close to one another but do not
have any form of government. They shy away from other races and keep to
themselves. Rarely do satyrs and korreds live together, but it not unheard
of.

Most fauns are only interested in frolicking in the forest and care nothing
for the trappings of civilization, although, especially in recent years,
more and more young males have been lured into the city seeking adventure,
fortune and romance.

Fauns are lovers, not fighters, but will defend themselves and their homes
should the need arise. Satyrs expecting trouble are sure to arm themselves
with bows and rely on their horns to attack enemies who get too close.
Korreds are capable of hurling small boulders and typically arm themselves
with cudgels, shears and lassos when preparing for battle.
