Title: a book called 'Side Effects of Magic'
"Side Effects of Magic" by Professor Gisela Aalfhaus, with contributions by
Professor Hyde Aalfhaus, Arcane College of Eisdorf.
There is little evidence that the mere act of casting spells has any
harmful side effects. However, this does not mean that magic doesn't have
any effect on the caster.
Certain spells have immediate and obvious drawbacks. The haste spell, if
overused, can burn out the metabolism of the target. Bloodmist can quickly
sap the caster of vitality as it drains blood.
Certain powerful magical artifacts use the caster's mana reserves to power
themselves. Others dampen the physical or mental capacities of the wearer.
Objects that are strongly aligned often leech alignment from their wearers.
The overindulgence in magical potions can leave imbibers feeling nauseous.
Also, consuming botched potions can cause a variety of ailments, ranging
from accidental curses to sudden death.
