The barbed wire consists of short lengths of steel wire, wrapped in pairs. 
Each pair has the the ends of the wires spun tightly around the next pair
of wires, so that the sharp wires ends stick out like spikes.  The whole of
length of it is arranged so--there are no spots to hold it it without
facing the spikes.
