This piece covers the shoulders of the wearer. It is square or rectangular in
shape and is normally about one foot square.  It is fastened by cordes to the
other pieces of armor, particularly the corselet.  In battle a piece of cloth
(sode jiruchi) is sometimes tied over the sode.  This cloth is dyed or
painted with a badge identifying the wearer.
