Actually, it is composed of two plates:  a large plate for the front and a
smaller, round plate for the back.  Each plate is lined with leather, which
serves to make the armor more comfortable and keeps the two plates attached
to one another. It does indeed seem that the plates are made of solid
gold--they certainly are heavy.
