Unlike the old torches of the distant past which burned oil, modern
mining torches use a chunk of glowstone, which emits a constant, steady
yellow light.  While dimmer than flame, it provides more than enough
light to navigate a mine shaft, and doesn't consume oxygen or produce
smoke.  They also last for literally years, becoming dimmer but never
burning out.

To use the torch, simply pick it up.  Just keep it in your 'inventory',
and it will light your way.
