The wires at attached to each end somehow, and on the perpendicular
surfaces are two metal plates.  As you examine it, you accidentally
drop it while holding the wires, and when it hits, you receive a
massive electrical shock!  This must be a fabled piezo-electric
crystal, one which converts hammer impacts into small lightning
bolts.
