Item description:
-------------------------------------------------
Many sheets of white paper are held loosely together by some metal rings.
The contents of the paper have been written by hand. They appear to be the
personal diary of a drow matron mother and ruler.
The earliest entries speak of an alliance with another drow city located a
few caves away from the city where the writer lived. Each city procured
different spell components and manufactured various armor, tools, and other
necessities, which they would sell to and trade with each other. While the
matron did not consider them to be friends, and though attempts to
overcharge and/or cheat each other were somewhat common, both parties
understood the importance of keeping a non-violent relationship and realized
the importance of the traded materials.
Alas, peace did not endure forever. The other and considerably larger city
experienced an internal war. Such events are not entirely unexpected in
drow society, wrote the matron, for she reflected that she herself had won
her throne by forcefully removing the previous ruling house of her city. In
this instance, the throne was conquered by a drow who favored necromancy.
While not unheard of, drow necromancers are not the norm, most training to
become either warriors, wizards, or clerics. This particular drow, being
radically different, decided she could obtain the materials previously
provided by the writer elsewhere for a more advantageous price. When the
merchants from her city, who had left on their first trading excursion
since the leadership change, were unceremoniously murdered, the matron
became rather angry and cut ties with her former ally.
There passed a few weeks of silence, when nothing was heard from their
former trade partners. And then the alarm sounded. Patrol groups returned
home injured and fewer in number, each one being attacked closer to home
than the last. Before long, the invading forces from the city that was once
an ally had breached the cave entrances. The entire population rose to
defend its home, and at first appeared to be successfully driving away the
enemy. This however did not last long, for they noticed that for every
casualty they experienced, their enemy's numbers grew in the form of
mindless yet bloodthirsty fighters. With many enemy drow following in their
new leader's necromantic footsteps, they had soon amassed a huge army of
the dead as well as otherworldly demons.
The very last entry expresses the matron's determination that her final
plan of attack will turn the tide of the battle.
