This area tour was run by Dentin. A rough, edited transcript of the text, with notes and
additions, is provided below.
The Fire Giants and Castle Abyrimoch area was built by the god Dentin in honor
of a similar area on Hidden Worlds. It was built from memory and has a different layout,
in addition to different creatures and vastly more interactive detail. It also became
home to several obscure trainers. It is suspected the area was completed prior to 2002.
This tour starts from the mines just east of the fire giant section.
Dentin: we're currently in the eastern part of abyrimoch
Dentin: there are some dwarves and slavers over here, and we're going to go say hi
Dentin: demonic mine overlord first
Dentin: regarding the demonic mine overlord, that was a mob that sorta came from hidden worlds
Dentin: HW had four levels of hell, and their abyrimoch was on level four. On
level 3, there was a section with some demonic mine overlords
Dentin: so I added one here
Dentin: slavers have an entirely different origin
Dentin: there is an old game called demons winter. That game had monsters called slaver
demons, and I always liked the name. The manes in qoorik, and the name qoorik itself, also came from demons winter
Dentin: everyone climb down
Dentin: dont attack the drake
Dentin: this drake has no purpose. It's a fire drake, and it sits here on the ledge
soaking up heat from the firefalls. He's cute. Stop and say hi when you're here, it's a good hangout spot
Dentin: climb up
Dentin: so the whole reason for building this area was the area on hidden worlds I originally modelled this after
Dentin: that area also had a fire giant with a fire giants sack, but
on that game, the sack was actually a scrotum when you looked at the long desc
Dentin: keep that in your mind next time you're hauling one around
Dentin: the one here is different, unless someone is playing a practical joke on me
Dentin: so there were two real reasons that I fell in love with this area on hidden worlds
Dentin: one was that hardly anything could see in the dark
Dentin: which was awesome, if you knew what you were doing. You could
put out all your light sources and go around in relative safety
Dentin: the other was the guards in the castle, which we'll see a bit later
Dentin: the abyrimoch guards had tantulhor bracers, which were flat
out the best bracers on the game even though nobody really knew it
Dentin: I was able to run those real easily, because I'm a bastard
Dentin: so here's the thing: hidden worlds has a bug in its light code
Dentin: if you get alignment zapped by a light source, it permanently lights the room that you're in, until the next reboot
Dentin: most of the people who went down to abyrimoch did it in the dark
Dentin: so I'd get my aligned light source and light up the whole fucking place, top to bottom, end to end, every boot
Dentin: the people who were used to running down there to get the equipment when it popped would
get aggro'd by everything and a lot of the time they would die, so it was known as being a super scary and dangerous place
Dentin: I used to just live down there collecting equipment
Dentin: ok, end of story time
Dentin: if you look north, you'll see one of the grandest spectacles on the game, the great
Firefalls of Phlegthos. It's all magma boys, lots and lots of it
Dentin: there's also a plate beneath your feet with a dedication on it
Dentin: lets go see the hellhounds I mentioned earlier today
Note - battle with hellhounds here, and looting of several spiked collars.
Dentin: spiked collars and bracers in the olden days were pretty awesome pieces of equipment
Dentin: I really should go get a full set of it just to look cool, heh
Dentin: we're now in the northwest section of the area
Dentin: this is where the fire giants actually live and hang out
Dentin: the fire giants were intended to be big nasty exp mobs, I'm surprised that a group this big does as well as it does
Dentin: wow, what the hell did you hit those guys with
Dentin: ok, lets do the king
Dentin: the king is kinda neat. He uses special code to block off the exit and prevent fleeing
Dentin: this big gate to the south is special
Dentin: normally, you'd need to get the key for it in order to open it
Dentin: we're going to just go through it, but I'll show you where to get the key
Fighter: that fire axe
Dentin: first though, we have more hellhounds to take care of
Dentin: something to remember is that I did a lot of that 'can't see in the dark' stuff
down here too. You may want to wander around in the dark some time and see what's aggro, see what isn't.
If you know all the safe places and safe styles of play, you can get around pretty easy
Dentin: that's the last of the hellhounds and keepers. There's three sets
Dentin: this is firoth
Dentin: he trades for the key to the big gate, and has a bunch of specps on him
Dentin: wow, you guys are better suited to a 'slaughter everything that moves' group than a tour
Dentin: this is the entrance to the castle
Dentin: the only way in is to wait for a little delivery demon to come through
here. He'll get them to lower the drawbridge, then you can sneak inside
Dentin: we aren't going to wait for him though, there's some other stuff to check out first
Dentin: this is a safe rest area. I built it because I wanted a place for
my mortals to rest, but it turns out there's no mobs in this section so it doesn't matter
Dentin: a lot of the descriptions have extras and hints on other things in the zone
Dentin: heh, in demons winter, there were pools that would heal you
Dentin: they had limited uses
Dentin: this one is unlimited, but it doesn't do anything
Dentin: this is a secret shrine to wyvren
Dentin: you have to get a special key to get in here, you'll have to explore the rest of the area to find it
Dentin: like I said, normally we'd have to wait for the demon to run through here to get into the castle
Dentin: I'm going to just force it
Dentin: be ready for the guards
Dentin: heh, no problem for this group
Dentin: so on hidden worlds, this was the part of the castle I liked the most
Dentin: I would light up the whole castle using that light bug we talked
about, and that would let me safely kill the guards one on one
Dentin: it would also let me get into these towers safely to rest, and collect arjale
Dentin: arjale is awesome stuff, or at least it used to be. It's too hard to get for its level to be useful now
Dentin: warning - at the tops of these towers are effectively boss mobs. Someone may die as we enter
Dentin: going up
Dentin: dara is a trainer, I believe the thief trainer
Dentin: above is gaziel witchbane
Dentin: known for his combat prowess
Dentin: easiest way to take out a caster is to hit them where they're weak - melee
Dentin: gaziel teaches some stuff too
Dentin: lots of skill teachers down here
Dentin: this is antiomno's room, but he's currently out looking at who broke into his shrine
Dentin: drac here teaches most of the crystal spell tree
Kerrigor: Alchemy took me here to learn shard storm years ago.
Dentin: we're going to go into the center of the castle now
Dentin: these vines have a very special proc on them
Dentin: they were one of the first ever self modifying mobs
Dentin: basically they start out nonaggro, and when they detect players they switch on their aggro flag to attack
Dentin: if you leave the room for a while, they switch back
Dentin: IF YOU VALUE YOUR LIFE, DO NOT ATTACK THESE TREES
Athlon: I once died for -21268 hp by sleeping in one of the tree rooms
Dentin: oh yeah, dont sleep here
Dentin: let me see if I can safely tank the one
Lizz: too late
Lilianne: oh wow
Lilianne: that was not good
Bunghole: ouch
Dentin: I warned you, but NOOOOOOOOOOOO
Dentin: someone had to go attack the trees
Bunghole: that was insanely fast death, lol
Lilianne: do your thing healers.. hehee
Dentin: well hopefully someone got fame for that
Sharla: You have acquired some of the fame in this area.
Dentin: lets go do the king, since you're all suicidal
Dentin: that's everything in abyrimoch
Dentin: I built this area in like a month way back when. I really should build another zone
Dentin: we have another place to go
Dentin: behind the throne is a passageway into a huge autogen maze
Dentin: it's been long enough after boot that we might actually see some mobs in here
Dentin: we'll give it a couple minutes, after that I'll gate us to the next area
Note - we didn't see anything, and went to the next area.
