This area tour was run by Dentin. A rough, edited transcript of the text, with notes and
additions, is provided below.
Castle Dragnok was built by the builder Kefka in the early days of the game. It is
a three rack zone, with many hidden pieces and sub-areas to explore. This tour
starts from the drawbridge of the castle.
Dentin: I know a little bit about this zone, but not a tremendous amount. I know
little of its history, other than I've seen some serious dumb shit go down in here
Dentin: I'm pretty sure I know all of the major places in it, though we'll
probably end up missing a few because the zone is so complicated
Dentin: we obviously can't get to the teleport rooms, but if it makes you feel any
better, those teleport rooms appear to only be mobload rooms and don't actually have anything interesting in them
Shadowweaver: so who's kefka? it says there is no player named kefka when I try and finger them.
Note - Kefka was automatically deleted due to inactivity many years ago, and while his name
is reserved, he doesn't show up in the playerbase. He does show up on the builders list.
Dentin: first thing we're going to do is go into the moat
Note - off to the side of the drawbridge is a slide down into the moat.
Dentin: normally, if you didn't have fly, you'd fall from here down into the moat. Or rather the dried out moat
Dentin: this dwarf talks about a giant stinky wyrm as part of a quest
Note - tour guide rips out unopenable iron grate and brings group into a special part of the castle.
Dentin: keep in mind that we're in the lower bowels of the castle
Dentin: basically, this is the cesspool
Dentin: if you go into the lavatory above, you can go down into here
Dentin: there's a mob here, we're going to go kill it
Dentin: there's a quest assocaiated with these leggings, I encourage you all to figure it out some time :)
Dentin: there's some leeches down in that pit, but I'm pretty sure we can't easily get down there without noleave
Dentin: that pit with leeches is underwater. You guys don't all have waterbreathing
Dentin: you'd like to think you can get out of the moat via this drawbridge, but yeah, you can't
Dentin: the only way out is through the maintenance tunnels on the west side
Dentin: we're now officially back in the castle
Dentin: and guess where the maintenance tunnel for the moat ends? the pantry, of all places
Dentin: why, I have no idea
Felonia: quickest way to rid the kitchen of garbage
Camlorn: actually, that makes a lot of sense.
Camlorn: if we're in a medieval castle, we don't know about, for example, germs, so.
Camlorn: the tunnel is the quickest way to the moat, without offending the guests
Note - the group encountered a mercenary guard on its way through the buttery, near the pantry.
Dentin: there's mercenaries all over the place, though it doesn't seem like anyone is really in charge here
Dentin: ok, we're basically just outside the flaming pit furnace area for the whole place right now
Dentin: we're going to go in there and hopefully nobody will die
Note - the group is now in the center of the firepit.
Dentin: you'll notice a maiden here, or rather the remains of one. The jerks in the room
above lowered her down as a sacrifice
Dentin: religious nutjobs, heh
Dentin: the only way out of the fiery pit is back through the buttery
Dentin: wine cellar/buttery
Dentin: ok, so story time
Dentin: that fire pit has killed countless people
Dentin: usually, they fall into it on accident from up above
Dentin: in the olden days, I had to do god level CRs to get back equipment because
there often wouldn't be enough people on to make it possible
Westie: [the guy above the fire pit] dispels
Roan: in the old days you lose your corpse, you lose your eq
Dentin: keep in mind, this area is nearly 300 rooms, and there's a lot of hidden sections
Dentin: the upper levels of the castle contain nearly all the interesting stuff
Dentin: we're going to avoid that for now and make sure the lower layers are explored
Dentin: there are two ways to go up, one of them is west of here, the other is on the other side of the keep
Athlon: wait, there's the staircases on the northwest side and what other way?
Dentin: we'll go up the other side and show you athlon
Dentin: the stables here aren't real interesting, near as I can tell. If anyone knows better, let me know
Eathmon: is there a waypoint?
Dentin: no, there's no waypoint
Dentin: whatever happened to this place, it basically destroyed a big chunk of the keep
Dentin: religious jerks rule half of it, mercenaries the rest
Westie: think the guards are employed by the religious nuts
Dentin: we have maidens to rescue
Phalange: apparently not
Athlon: bye bye girls
Shadowweaver: woops?
Dentin: well, I suppose that killing the maidens is sorta rescuing them
Athlon: death is the ultimate freedom
Xorg: this is off candlewood right?
Shadowweaver: dark forest
Dentin: this area is located west of candlewoods, not far
Dentin: this is a big reading, study room
Dentin: no idea what this sage is for
Dentin: basically this part is empty except for him
Dentin: this is the place that takes you down to the worm and stench below the moat
Dentin: dont go down
Dentin: it's the cesspool, heh
Dentin: roast piglet in the refectory
Dentin: destroyed kitchen nearby
Dentin: that albino mage is important in some way, I'm not sure why
Dentin: ok, we're going to hit up the dispelling guy
Dentin: if you fall, I may have to summon you back
Note - we all fell in.
Dentin: we'll just have to climb back out, heh
Dentin: last place on this level is the courtyard
Dentin: the courtyard is in the center, but it's kinda a maze and it's bigger than the space it fits in
Dentin: pain in the ass to navigate
Dentin: a few months ago, it was brought to my attention that there was actually something in this courtyard
Dentin: morph and I reworked the rooms to make it so you could actually get in there
Dentin: I'm not going to brute force these doors to show you all whats inside
Dentin: you'll want to explore the area and figure out how to actually get in
Note - the group prepares to ascend the southeastern staircase.
Dentin: ok, we're going up now
Dentin: to answer athlons earlier question, this is the other way up
Dentin: lots of decoration mobs in here
Dentin: if you go west, you'll end up falling behing the back of the castle near the destroyed kitchen
Note - the group went down through the trapdoor in the northeast watch tower to the dungeon.
Dentin: this is the dungeons. Normally you'd need a special key to get down here
Dentin: but there's something funny I wanted to show you
Dentin: this is where the paladins are
Dentin: there's a number of other cells down here, but I'm going to have to go soon, so we'll skip it
Dentin: this is the demonlords chamber
Dentin: there's two ways to get at the demonlord
Dentin: you can either kill the mages guarding him and let him out, or
you can go to camilles chamber and drop down inside the wards from above
Dentin: we're just going to nuke him
Note - the group handily kills the demon lord.
Dentin: I remember when this guy was a ridiculous badass that simply destroyed people
Dentin: not so much anymore
Dentin: this is the place I was talking about with camille
Dentin: if you go down from here, you fall into the demon lords chamber
Dentin: ok, next part
Dentin: there's a spider and some cobwebs here
Dentin: the spider is a pain in the ass, it comes and goes at random
Dentin: I took down the web wards this afternoon so the two sides are now linked better
Dentin: not sure where the spider is
Dentin: come out of the lair
Dentin: everyone come back out of the lair or I'm leaving you
Dentin: and here's ye olde spider, heh
Dentin: I have no idea about the queen of dragnok, but this room is described up the ass with extras
Dentin: spend some time in here and see if you can read them all
Dentin: this is glass golems
Dentin: you won't be able to see a lot of the glass mobs in here without detect invis
Dentin: this is a pretty messy chunk of rooms, it doesn't map because the mirrors make it confusing
Dentin: and that's the master enchanter
Dentin: and here's the diamond golem
Dentin: this is the last section
Dentin: which is good, because I've got to bail
Dentin: mercenaries, tons of them
Dentin: this is their barracks
Dentin: and just like that, we're back on the bottom floor
Dentin: and now we're back where we started
Owyn: cool, thanks for the tour Dentin
