The 17th Anniversary of Alter Aeon - Jan 13-15, 2012
On a cold day in 1995, in the middle of January in the heart of Alaska, the first lines
of code were laid down and Alter Aeon was born. By February the game server had
rooms, mobs, and the ability to save areas. By May, the server was online and
a dozen builders were hammering on it to create areas.
Now, 17 years later, it's time to celebrate! This year's anniversary event involved
a deranged cleric, an angry elemental from the plane of earth, and a mud-wide plot to
destroy planar magic. All our participants performed superbly, and with their
combined effort things were returned to normal.
All participants received special deeds, which will be visible for all time on
their quest lists.
Friday, Jan 13, 2012 - Part 1
On friday, after numerous reports of unusual difficulty casting spells and anomalous
spell casting failures, the Ralnoth Mages Guild issued the following statement:
IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT FROM THE MAGES GUILD
By now, many of you have noticed that something is most definitely wrong
with the way that elemental spells are working. The worst hit so far have been the
raw elemental spellgroups of fire, ice, lightning, and crystal.
Whatever is happening, it is not isolated to spellcasters. Thieves have also
reported that the use of shadow skills has become unusually draining
and necromancers are reporting odd complaints from summoned demons. Oddly
enough, there have been no reports of problems in any of the cleric disciplines.
The evidence so far indicates that the distance between our plane and others is
increasing. It has long been theorized that planar magic is only possible because
the planes are somehow 'nearby', allowing a small amount of mana to bridge the
distance and effect a large change. If the planes drift too far away, this may
no longer be possible.
In short, this could potentially destroy many important fields of magic. It is
possible that all elemental magics, shadow magic, and demon granted powers may
all vanish in the near future.
We have been working around the clock to understand what is going on, but we
need more information. All able bodied individuals are encouraged to see Resaech
in the Ralnoth Mages Guild to assist in the data gathering effort.
May the gods of the pantheon go with you all.
To gather data, players were given enchanted data collection crystals and sent
to various locations. Once in the proper location, a number of spells had to be
cast on the crystal; the strength of the spells was recorded by the crystal, for
later analysis at the Mages Guild.
The required spells were:
- detect magic (for calibration)
- shower of sparks (from the elemental plane of fire)
- shocking grasp (from the elemental plane of lightning)
- chill touch (from the elemental plane of ice)
- crystal light (from the elemental plane of crystal)
- coldfire (unknown, possibly spirit realm)
- Tarrant's Spectral Hand (spirit realm)
Players were asked to collect data from seven different locations on the game:
- The Elemental Plane of Air, near the Heavyside Layer
- The Elemental Plane of Earth
- The unnamed no-magic realm reachable via portal from Redferne's Palace
- Valhalla
- The outer-planar ice world
- The outer-planar fire world
- The edge of the demon realm
By going to these remote locations and measuring the strength of magic in each,
it was hoped that a map could be built to better understand planes and why
planar magic was failing.
For more detail and hints on these data collection quests, please see
Appendix A near the bottom of this page.

list of Friday's participants near the

Saturday, Jan 14, 2012 - Part 2
On saturday, after analysis of a lot of data and a lot of investigation,
the Ralnoth Mages Guild issued the following statement:
IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT FROM THE MAGES GUILD
All of the major guilds would like to publicly thank the countless
individuals who assisted us in the latest crisis. The data has been
analyzed and they confirm our worst fears.
The planes, all of them, are slowly drifting away from ours. As the
distance increases, all magic that depends on other planes will be
affected - by increased access costs at first, but eventually by a
complete inability to use those types of magic.
Unfortunately, most of the ancient magics that were originally used
to construct interplanar portals have been lost, and we have few leads
going forward. Currently, our best clue is an ancient religious text
containing the following passage:
And Dentin gathered up all the different realms in his hand, and
bound them together yet not together, for each was to him a single
thread in a grand tapestry.
And when the realms were so bound, their magics began to overlap.
The ancient builders saw this and opened the portals, and Dentin
was pleased.
From the Celestial Archive can it still be seen, hanging in the
sky to prove the power of our gods.
Our recent observations seem to back this. The planes seem to be bound
together in some fashion, and it appears that the binding is weakening.
This weakening is also affecting necromancy. The Necromancer's guild
has been in constant communication with the demon realm for several
days, and has stated that the demons are considerably more concerned
about this than we are.
The researchers in the demon realm have even gone so far as to provide
information about the existence of the Celestial Archive. Unusually,
they are providing assistance free of charge - something previously
unheard of.
While investigation continues, Redferne, the master of the floating
palace anchored to Gad's Mountain, has requested assistance collecting
repair materials for an ancient portal device. We believe that if
suitable coordinates are found, it may be possible to use the portal
to reach the Celestial Archive.
Those able to do so, please report to Redferne for further details.
Others may continue to assist us in our ongoing data collection efforts
at the Ralnoth mages guild.
May the gods of the pantheon go with us.
A number of those that chose to assist Redferne were shocked to find
him working with the demon Ixillia under the supervision of the necromancer
Vantamus. In addition to retrieving spellbinding components to help keep
the demon under control, there were several items that needed to be
retrieved to repair the portal:
Redferne says, 'I and my ... friends here, have been working to both
determine if and where the Celestial Archive exists, as well as to
repair this portal. While it may seem simple from the outside, the
interior is ridiculously complex and well beyond either of us.
Nevertheless, we must try.
The first thing that we know we need is something called a 'radioactive
isotope'. The books say that we need a very concentrated form that is
particularly dangerous to handle, though with healing magic I hardly
see how that could be possible.
Radioactive things are apparently used as power sources, and when
concentrated enough will glow and feel warm to the touch. I've heard
reports from explorers that lead me believe there may be power sources
like this in the nomagic biolab, accessible through the dual post
portal in the lobby. Please search for one, and if you can find it
return it to me.
If you are unsuccessful, we may have to try a different type of power
source, but I think it best we stay with the original design.'
Once the radioactive isotope bar was retrieved, the next required item
was a filament or thread of elemental fire:
Redferne says, 'Excellent. This will let us work on the power source
for the gate at least. It doesn't seem like much does it?'
Redferne flips the bar twice, and bends it between two giant fingers.
Redferne sighs.
Redferne says, 'It would appear that one of the next
pieces we will require is a power conduit or coupling of some sort. We
need something similar to this:'
Redferne opens a nearby panel and shows a clear tube containing what
appears to be a trapped filament of fire twisting inside.
Redferne says, 'Please search the outer planar fire realms for a
suitably cooperative (or uncooperative if necessary) elemental that
looks like this. We believe we will be able to use elemental forces
for this piece.'
The final piece required to repair the portal was a piece of blue crystal:
Redferne says, 'Thank you, hopefully it will last long enough and be
strong enough act as a power coupler.
One of the final pieces which we cannot construct here is a block of
solid blue crystal, similar to these two pieces.'
Redferne shows you two cracked and broken pieces of deep blue crystal.
Redferne says, 'Travellers to the outer planar ice world occasionally
report seeing crystals like this, but all of the fragments that are in
my possession are far too small to use. Please use the portal in the
lobby to enter the plane, and search for a suitably large piece of
crystal. If you can find such a piece, please return it to me.'
Upon returning the crytal, Redferne gave a final task:
Redferne holds the crystal up to the light and examines it.
Redferne says, 'Well that is interesting. Ixillia, there are six images
of the light, with different spacing dependent on angle. I wonder if
that's important.'
Redferne says, 'Thank you, though it looks like figuring out how to use
this crystal will be more complicated than we thought.
For our next need, we have encountered several references to a book
titled 'Planes and Realms' which may be useful. I've already requested
a copy through the Mage's guild, but as yet they have been unable to
locate a copy. Please see if you can find a copy and return to us.'
The book happened to be a very important piece of work, though the librarians in the
Fire Towers did not seem to think it worth accurately adding to their catalog:
Redferne leafs through the book for a few moments.
Redferne says, 'Ixillia, I think we hit the jackpot.'
Redferne tosses the book to the necromancer.
Redferne says, 'Vantamus, please give this to Ix with a clear clause
that it be returned to us prior to him leaving. No offense Ix, I will
ensure that you receive a copy for yourself as per our agreement, but I
won't take any chances on that being the last copy.'
Ixillia grins evilly.
Redferne says 'Thank you very much for your help. There is still much
work for us to do, but I believe the remainder lies on our shoulders
now. We will notify the Mage's guild of our status or if we need more
help.'
With that, Redferne turns back to work, talking in a strange language
to Ixillia.
Vantamus also requested spell components to help reinforce the wards
containing the demon
Ixillia, who while renowned for its knowledge, is more renowned for its
cruelty, power, age, and ability to eat summoners:
Vantamus says, 'It is remarkably difficult to maintain wards against
a demon as strong as Ixillia. His very presence erodes the barriers
at a shocking rate, and were he to actually put forth effort even I
would have to release him in short order. He is extremely old and
intelligent, and were it not for the current crisis not even I would
have been able to ask him here.
If you are willing, it would be of great assistance to have some of
the more rare spell components to help reinforce the wards. If you
could bring me unicorn blood and ground basilisk scales, it would
perhaps give me more time between recastings, and allow me to better
protect Redferne.'
After giving the blood to Vantamus, he asked for a second spell component:
Vantamus says, 'Thank you. Fortunately, a little bit goes a long
way. This will actually add almost another entire layer to the wards
you see here, at least for as long as it lasts.'
Vantamus says, 'The other component that would help me greatly is ground
or powdered basilisk scales. One of Ixillia's traits is noxious poison,
and the basilisk powder should grant the ward substantially greater
resistance to Ixillia's presence. If you are able to procure any,
please return it to me. I will pay well for it.'
Vantamus turns to the wards and surveys them carefully, looking for
weak spots.
When the scales are found, the quests for this part of the event are
complete:
Vantamus says, 'Thank you very much. This should hold up better in
the presence of Ixillia than the blessed chalk I had been using.'
Vantamus turns back to the wards and carefully begins marking various
spots with the powder.

list of Saturday's participants near the
bottom of this page.
Sunday, Jan 15, 2012 - Part 3
Late in the day, an update was provided by the increasingly frantic Mages Guild:
UPDATE FROM THE MAGES GUILD
As many of you have noticed, our situation is rapidly deteriorating.
Even low level spells are becoming cumbersome to cast, with some
failing outright. At this rate, we do not have long to take action.
We have several research teams looking at this right now, but so far
our best hope lies with Redferne, who is currently working with
Ixillia (yes, -that- Ixillia, no, we are not joking) to repair a portal
in the hopes of accessing a location that will provide more clues.
Everyone is encouraged to provide assistance if they can, or stay out
of the way if not.
Redferne expects to have the portal working soon, and has advised us to
assemble a raiding party for the worst case scenario.
More to come soon.
Redferne asks that the raiding party assemble in his palace, and after a time
summons the party leaders:
Redferne says, 'it is good to have you all here'
Redferne says, 'Ixillia and I have managed to repair this aged gate, at least well enough for it to run for short periods of time'
Redferne says, 'we've also some remote observation as to where it leads'
Redferne says, 'currently, the other side is a deactivated portal that appears to be built onto a vast stone ring'
Redferne says, 'we believe the ring is located either in, or near, the celestial archive'
Redferne says, 'unfortunately, there are others already present. We sensed a massive, incredibly evil presense nearby'
Redferne says, 'we do not believe we were detected, so perhaps you will still have the element of surprise'
Redferne says, 'once I activate the portal, you should all enter it as quickly as possible. Our
repairs are delicate and cannot hold the gate for more than a few minutes without being damaged'
Redferne says, 'are you ready?'
Redferne fiddles with some strange looking equipment attached to the gate.
A hazy purple field snaps into place inside the portal, which begins humming loudly.
Redferne says, 'say the gate is now open, enter quickly before we have to shut it down'
Players entering the portal find an elaborate stone archway on the stone ring mentioned by Redferne.
(Description and background of the ring:
The sky appears to be an indefinitely large, glowing space with a handful of long
spacetime hosepipes bound together in a large knot at the center. Most of
the planes lie roughly on a line through the center of the ring, leaving space for
the ring around the knot some distance out.
This isn't actually the Celestial Archive. The original Archive
fell into the knot and was lost/destroyed millenia ago. Normally, there's no matter
in this space, but a very powerful creature from the plane of earth pulled in several
million tons of rock and fashioned it into a torus around the knot. A small amount of
gravity keeps everyone stuck to the torus. Placed at geometrically appropriate locations
are six big runes carved into the torus, each part of a spell to destabilize the knot.)
Almost immediately, the players discover that they are not alone, and that the
planes are being manipulated intentionally:
Kevarkus the deranged cleric yells, 'you may have reached my handiwork, but
you're far too late to stop it'
Kevarkus the deranged cleric yells, 'the glyphs have been set and the breaking
spell has been cast, all that remains is to wait for the planes to separate'
Kevarkus the deranged cleric yells, 'soon the world will be pure again, free
from the unnatural influences of the other planes'
Kevarkus the deranged cleric yells, 'the powers of the godly will once again
reign supreme, as was originally intended'
There are a large number of earth elementals on the ring, guarding and moving material.
After many battles eventually reach Kevarkus, and easily defeat him. However, not all
is well - the cleric was just a pawn, used by the earth elemental.
(Background - the elemental is extremely old and powerful, and is irritated at the
constant trespass of players into the plane of earth. It decides to unknot space
to make interplanar travel impossible. Spells failing are a trivial consequence
of breaking the knot.
While the creature was able to set up the infrastructure, it could not perform
the breaking spell. For that, it needed an extremely powerful cleric to erect
the rune stones to break the god level binding on the knot. A god created the
binding, and only godly powers can break it.)
You feel a deep rumbling in the rock beneath your feet.
Do not interfere mortals
I am older by far than you
For too long have you trod in my realm
Unwelcome and unbidden
The ground shifts strangely under your feet.
The planes allow you passage
But soon nevermore
My stones and crystals chime in anticipation
Of the day you will never return
A tremendous, gigantic creature of rock and fire rises up out of the ground before you!
The battle with the great elemental is long and fierce, but our heroes are eventually
victorious.
For all its age and power, the elemental knows when it is beaten. It
retreats into the stone floor of the ring, out of sight and reach, to
fight again another day.
You feel the rock beneath your feet rumble once again:
Still you are too late
Only the powers of the gods can stop what I have set in motion
By their inaction shall I succeed
They will not help you
Its last words said, the elemental departs and is silent.
Redferne, watching this from afar, enters the scene:
Redferne yells, 'ho that was quite a battle for a bunch of youngsters'
Redferne yells, 'this whole affair is quite inconvenient, but maybe we can do something about it'
Redferne yells, 'make your way back here while i think about it'
The players return to the archway to pick up Redferne, and then begin to
explore the ring. Eventually, the true nature of the breaking spell is
determined to be rune magic, and the spell is built from six massive
runes set into the ring:
- Jah - 'power'
- Ber - 'shatter' or 'to break'
- Xix - 'to grasp' or 'to hold'
- Alu - 'to remove' or 'weaken'
- Ort - 'to push'
- Mun - 'apart' or 'to separate'
Ixillia proposes trying to cast a rebinding spell, and Redferne leads the
group through rituals to destroy the Ber, Alu, and Mun runes. Then the
group recasts the destroyed runes as Luk, Tal, and Ral. The new rune set
becomes:
- Jah - 'power'
- Luk - 'to bind'
- Xix - 'to grasp' or 'to hold'
- Tal - 'to strenthen'
- Ort - 'to push'
- Ral - 'together'
Like all rune based spells, this one is inactive until powered. Unfortunately,
Jah, the leading runestone, is a blood rune and requires a sacrifice to awaken.
A brave cleric, Westie, volunteers to lead the casting, and with his death
the spell is activated and the planes are rebound. (For the western timezone
version of this event, the player Frak volunteered.)
But one does not cast god-level spells without getting the attention of powerful
entities:
Dentin says, 'what are all you doing here?'
Dentin looks upward at the knot.
Dentin says, 'oh, I remember this place'
Dentin looks at the ground, the rune, and the corpse.
Dentin says, 'that's rather good work Redferne, congratulations on being in the right place at the right time'
Dentin pokes the corpse with his toe.
Dentin says, 'interesting way to do the binding. You guys have a long way to go though'
Dentin utters a handful of words that slide out of your mind like water.
The rune flashes bright violet, then each of the runes in the chain in succession, until the circle is complete.
A line of purple fire arcs from rune to rune around the ring, then settles into and buries itself into the stone.
Dentin says, 'that should hold a little better. It'll also keep it from being broken in the future'
Dentin says, 'I suppose with that, there's no need to keep him trapped in the ring'
Dentin points at the corpse of Westie.
A white light wells up inside the corpse of Westie, and it slowly rises off the ground!
Westie looks about dazedly, but is whole once again.
Dentin says, 'Welcome back Westie. Inhabiting a spell like that is pretty boring, isn't it?'
Dentin says, 'Redferne, see if you can get your gate to stabilize and be open all the time. No point letting a beautiful sight like this go to waste'
Dentin looks upward toward the rapidly coalescing knot.
Dentin says, 'also, I believe your talents will be needed later. I wrote that book myself you know'
Dentin vanishes in a puff of smoke and is gone.
With that, all is right in the world and the event is over.

list of Sunday's participants near the
bottom of this page.
Appendix A - Data Collection Quests
All quests were given by Resaech, the Ralnoth Mages Guild guildmaster. For the first
data collection quest in the Elemental Plane of Air:
Resaech says, 'Excellent, we need all the help we can get. We are trying
to collect precision data on planar spacing and drift, and for this we
need people willing to trek to distant lands. All of the major guilds
and cities have been collaborating on this.
Just a short time ago we received our first shipment of measurement
crystals. These crystals record spells cast into them, and using the
recordings from different realms we may be able to piece together what's
going on.
This crystal is intended to be used in the plane of air. Simply take it to
any location in the heavyside layer and cast the following spells into it:
- detect magic
- shower of sparks
- shocking grasp
- chill touch
- crystal light
- coldfire
- tarrant's spectral hand
Return the crystal to me when it is full, and I'll pass it on for analysis.
Thank you again for your assistance.'
For the second data collection quest in the Elemental Plane of Earth:
Resaech says, 'The next set of data we need to collect is from the elemental
plane of earth. Unfortunately, this will be more difficult than the
plane of air.
We expect only a select few locations to be usable, and finding the
appropriate location may be difficult. The easiest way to find the
correct location may simply be to explore everywhere, and cast the
'detect magic' spell on the crystal to see if it triggers.
Again, the required spells are:
- detect magic
- shower of sparks
- shocking grasp
- chill touch
- crystal light
- coldfire
- tarrant's spectral hand
Return the crystal to me when it is full, and I'll pass it on for analysis.
Good luck.'
For the third data collection quest in the nomagic biolab:
Resaech says, 'The next set of data we need to collect is from the strange
techological area known as the nomagic biolab. While this is not a true
plane, it is known that it lies near the edge of our plane, and is
sufficiently far away that information from it should prove useful.
Similar to the plane of earth, we expect only a select few locations
to be usable, and finding the appropriate location may be difficult.
The easiest way to find the correct location may simply be to explore
everywhere, and cast the 'detect magic' spell on the crystal to see
if it triggers.
Again, the required spells are:
- detect magic
- shower of sparks
- shocking grasp
- chill touch
- crystal light
- coldfire
- tarrant's spectral hand
Return the crystal to me when it is full, and I'll pass it on for analysis.
Good luck.'
For the fourth data collection quest from Viking Valhalla:
Resaech says, 'The next set of data we need to collect is from the Viking
realm of Valhalla. We don't actually know where this is located, but we
do have previous readings to compare against.
We expect only a select few locations to be usable. As before, the
easiest way to find the correct location may simply be to explore
everywhere, and cast the 'detect magic' spell on the crystal to see
if it triggers.
The required spells are:
- detect magic
- shower of sparks
- shocking grasp
- chill touch
- crystal light
- coldfire
- tarrant's spectral hand
Return the crystal to me when it is full, and I'll pass it on for analysis.
Good luck.'
For the fifth data collection quest from the outer-planar ice world:
Resaech says, 'The next set of data we need to collect is from the outer
planar ice world. This is another prime material location that is far
enough away to give interesting data. As with the previous crystals,
we expect only a select few locations to be usable.
Again, the required spells are:
- detect magic
- shower of sparks
- shocking grasp
- chill touch
- crystal light
- coldfire
- tarrant's spectral hand
Return the crystal to me when it is full, and I'll pass it on for analysis.
Good luck.'
For the sixth data collection quest from the outer-planar fire world:
Resaech says, 'The next set of data we need to collect is from the outer
planar fire world. This is a prime material location that is far enough
away to give interesting data. As with the previous crystals, we expect
only a select few locations to be usable.
Again, the required spells are:
- detect magic
- shower of sparks
- shocking grasp
- chill touch
- crystal light
- coldfire
- tarrant's spectral hand
Return the crystal to me when it is full, and I'll pass it on for analysis.
Good luck.'
For the final data collection quest from the edge of the Demon Realm:
Resaech says, 'The final set of data we need to collect is from the demon
realm. This is a dangerous, risky mission, and for that we apologize.
However, the cause is just, and much hangs in the balance.
The Fire Towers near Zin have one of the few entrances to the demon realm,
and they have offered to open it for use. We wish you the best of luck
in finding suitable places to use the crystal, and we pray for your
return.
The required spells are:
- detect magic
- shower of sparks
- shocking grasp
- chill touch
- crystal light
- coldfire
- tarrant's spectral hand
Return the crystal to me when it is full, and I'll pass it on for analysis.
Good luck.'
When all quests are completed and data collection is finished:
Resaech takes the crystal and carefully hands it to an underling.
Resaech says, 'Thank you, I'll make sure this gets analyzed.'
Resaech says, 'That's all we can do for now, it will take time to go
over all this and determine what to do next. Thank you again for your
time, we'll distribute the results as soon as they become available.'
Here are a handful of hints, tips, and rules for completing these quests:
- You only need to cast each spell once on the crystal, if you're in the
right place. When the crystal is full, it will flash differently and let
you know.
- You may need to bring other players with you to be able to cast all of
the spells onto your crystal. Other players can help you, but you must be
the one to return the crystal to Resaech.
- You may not use multis to cast on your crystal.
- If your spells constantly hit crystals or mobs that are on the ground,
try casting on 'detector' or use the uuid of your crystal when casting on
it.
- There are only a few locations where the crystals work. If you can't
find yours, ask other players to take you to their location, and see if
your crystal works there.
- The earth plane is huge. Focus on the floating mountain, the cave of
crystal, and near the crystal forest.
